D&D Cartoon

Earlier today I was innocently scanning the DVD selection at the local Walmart when my eye caught the red Dungeons and Dragons font. Out of curiosity and no real desire to buy, I pulled the original cartoon DVD from the shelf and saw a sticker for five bucks. I couldn't pass that up!

I remember watching a few episodes in my youth, though I much preferred Transformers and Robotech. I was seven when the show initially aired in 1983 and was just getting into Basic when it was canceled two years later.

It was fun to watch for sake of nostalgia, and I suppose there is food for adventures. Despite being a kid's show, it features far more violence than, say, GI Joe from the same general time. Some of the creatures and characters are interesting enough to become PC's. I'm sure someone has done this, I haven't taken the time to search the net for this yet.

The character's solutions are frequently singular and simple, and there are plenty of nonsensical "whaaa?" moments, but, as I said, it's a guilty (and cheap) pleasure from D&D's heyday.

  1. I really liked the show, but like you it was before the time of playing the game. I grabbed a DVD of the shows cheap a couple of years ago, but I keep putting off watching it because I fear it won't be as good as I remember it.

  2. It's not, but fun to see some old friends from Fiend Folio, etc.

  3. WotC released a Dungeons and Dragons cartoon Collectible Package that included, among many other things, a module to bridge players from the cartoon, and cartoon character stats. I'd love to find a copy somewhere.
