Map: Overview 1

I'm hard at work on my next for-sale adventure module.  Below is a draft of the overall map.  I hand drew the coast and rivers using a computer slate.  Next, I shaded the ocean with a filler tool and added text for the three locations I've keyed.

Here I tried to get fancy and... I don't believe it worked.  Oh well.

What Name Do You Prefer Poll Results

I asked readers which term they preferred, Dungeon Master, Game Master, or Referee.  I had 65 reponses in a month, which I believe, is a large enough sample size to create valid inferences.  Here are a few thoughts, some of which aren't particularly ground-breaking and may seem obvious, but at least they're quantitified to an extent (though certainly not formally conclusive):

  • D&D is the primary fantasy RPG paradigm.
  • Referee is being replaced over time.
  • Game Master is preferred for those who often play multiple game systems and/or multiple genres.

It's More of a Litterbox Than a Sandbox...

"This isn't a plop and drop type of adventure, but if you prepare in advance, it should give your party a unique and fun experience."  -  Tenkar's Tavern

"Dylan Hartwell over at Digital Orc released his follow up project called the Horrendous Heap of Sixteen Cities. He does his own artwork that I enjoy. It's got a original angle for gaming. At least one I have not heard of before. I plan on snagging this one after I get done writing this post."  -  Gothridge Manor

"I'm not going to lie: I haven't read it yet. But I've previously talked about the quality of this guy's modules, and I'm going to go ahead and say that you should give it a try. I'll probably end up purchasing a copy in the next few days."  -  How to Succeed in RPGs or Die Trying

Extending above a haze of reeking steam rise sixteen peaks of garbage magically transported from sixteen different cities. It spreads, like an ever-growing fungus, across the landscape, encompassing and corrupting nearly fifty square miles. Hideous flies, crows, and vultures circle the piles, perpetually avoiding garbage falling from magical portals thousands of feet in the air. Giant rats, skunks, maggots, and other manner of repugnant beasts scuttle about the surface, surviving off the offal. Underneath, giant worms crawl through the debris. Periodic explosions reform the horizon. Some cultures call it “Sheoal”, others “Kol Katta”. All, however, use the common vernacular “The Heap”. And everywhere its name is synonymous with “Hell”.

THE HORRENDOUS HEAP OF SIXTEEN CITIES! is a sandbox fantasy adventure. Contained within are original and terrifying monsters, maps of The Heap, and multiple adventures for months of play.

For a mere $2.99 you get:

  • 17 New Monsters
  • 3 Maps
  • 5 Detailed Non-Player Characters
  • More than 25 Original Illustrations
  • 7 Plot Hooks
  • 29 Pages (2 for license)

And if I might add my own quote to those above:

"It's really more of a litterbox than a sandbox."  -  Dylan Hartwell, Digital Orc

My D&D Art

As I neared final edits for my second published D&D adventure, I realized I wanted to include more art.  Below are a few of the more than twenty-five illustrations I completed for THE HORRENDOUS HEAP OF SIXTEEN CITIES!  Writing is the heart of the adventure, but artwork creates a powerful atmosphere in a way very different from mechanics, descriptions, and tables.  Enjoy.

Item: Mad Simeon's Skull

Any elf holding this item, creates a magical aura that provides +1 to hit for all elves within 100 feet.  The holder can not attack while holding.

Backstory:  Simeon was a powerful fighter who killed many elves as humans encroached on elf forests.  Eventually killed in a massive elf raid, Simeon's skull was taken to an elf shamen who turned it into the magic artifact it is today.

Ode to A Great Man

A friendly entertainer and entrepreneur, Benny is also a shrewd business-halfling. He runs an inn called The Burping Cavalier which features a popular variety show and dance routine every third day of the week. Charismatic and witty, Benny has passed many a friendly hour in front of the fire trading jokes with customers and flirting with his many beautiful barkeeps.

Benny, 5th Level Halfling, Lawful, HP: 21, AC: 9, Items: 100 gp.

Note:  I created Benny's Inn name using my Inn Name Generator.

Pilz Brewing (D&D&Drinking)

My first publication, THE BLASPHEMOUS BREWERY OF PILZ! continues to sell well.  Above is the label I created for the monk's delicious beer which is at the heart of the entire adventure.

I'm going to fill a page with them, cut them out, laminate, and apply to beer bottles for full effect at my next game.

Cheers!

What are you waiting for?  The adventure costs less than a beer at the bar!  All the filling without the hangover!  Buy it now before it's empty...

Clerics of the Astonishing Revelation

Clerics of the Astonishing Revelation are a powerful organization of many thousand lawful female clerics. 75% are human, 15% elf, 5% halfling, and 5% dwarf. Chapters are organized in most towns and cities. Their primary focus is helping the poor and destitute. These clerics are forbidden from marriage, but not from enjoying somewhat hedonistic and epicurean pursuits.

Clerics are assigned to different chapters every other year in rotational duties. One of these duties includes service at The Heap. Members are loosely organized into three hierarchies; the Addiscentis, the Medicus, and the Septum Auctorus. The Addiscentis are new into the convent and shadow a Medicus as they learn spells and other skills. Once an Addiscentis has both demonstrated competencies and decided to become a Cleric, they undergo an initiation and gain the title Medicus. The Medicae are the largest group of Clerics, generally taking the number of duties accomplished after their title. For example, Amber has completed two duties and is therefore called Amber Medicus Duo. Clerics that complete at least seven duties may be voted into the highest hierarchy, the Septum Auctorus. This small group of powerful Clerics makes important decisions and commandments for all Clerics of the Astonishing Revelation. Clerics may leave the organization at any time without penalty.

My Project, Your Project, OSR Project!

I've received and finished the drafts for seven individuals for my next project which features you, dear reader!  That's right, if you'll insert your character data (Labyrinth Lord Basic) using the link below, I will use your alter ego in a new adventure I plan on publishing on RPGNow.  You can see the detail and rules on my earlier post.

Below is a sample.  Please bear in mind it is a rough draft and will likely be longer and cleaned up by the time of publication.  I will also add story hook elements.

Aaron The Archaeologist
Starting his career as a capable fighter, Aaron quickly developed a passion for the history and diversity of the fantastic world around him.  Equipped with undeniable charisma, excellent memory, and a knack for language, he was a key part of several significant treaties.  Royalty and town leaders often hire him as a moderator for disputes.

Tall and muscular, Aaron stays in excellent shape traveling everywhere on foot.  He typically wears leather armor and arms himself with several magical daggers and a single staff of unbreakable Tarfwood.  He wears a magical amulet and earring which allow him to both speak and understand any language encountered.

Aaron’s passion, however, is in archaeology.  He travels, in groups and alone, to new locations for study.  Rarely, however, does he loot ancient dungeons and ruins, choosing instead to document and learn from what it can reveal.  As such, he is often given travel permission from a variety of unlikely sources.  Rumors persist that a Red Dragon at one time hired Aaron to research and write a comprehensive history of dragons in the South Drachenbach Mountain range.

Aaron:  7th Level Fighter, Neutral, HP:  28, AC:  7 (leather armor), Weapons:  Staff (1d6), +1 Dagger (2) (1d4+4), Items Carried:  Scrolls, Writing Kit, Travel Rations, Bedroll, Magical Translation Earring and Amulet.

Flying Swordsmen

I forgot to give a shout out to Lord Gwydion for finishing his Flying Swordsmen RPG when it was released several weeks ago.  It looks good and is free for download.  Anyone familiar with D&D will be ready to pick and play.  Check it out.

Below are several pieces I submitted for inclusion.

The OSR Needs YOU!

Here’s my idea: I will write and illustrate a new Labyrinth Lord adventure in which your alter egos are the PC’s. I have a core idea which can handle just about anything you throw at me.

When finished, the adventure will list for $2.99 on RPGNow, but those who participate receive a free PDF. Please note:  I may modify your submissions.
To participate, click the link titled “SUBMIT CHARACTER” below .
What do you get out of it if you participate?
  • Free copy of the adventure in PDF format.
  • Free artwork in JPEG format of character you describe. I retain copyright, but will give permission for use in any of your own projects. (See examples of my art by clicking here).
  • The satisfaction that comes from participating in an Old School product that pulls us all together.
If you are not interested in participating, but approve of the idea, please pass the word along to those who you think might take interest.
If you have suggestions, comments, etc, please share via comment or email me at hartwell602 at gmail dot com.

Mentzer & New Module & Unknown Visage

I'm a big fan of Frank Mentzer and am excited to see him publishing again.  I own BECMI and Frank has graciously signed several of them.  In fact, I even bought another copy of red box during an auction at Origins he was running in the late 90's.

He has recently released a new module, Lich Dungeon.  Looking at the cover, and the dwarf in particular, I'm SURE that I've see that profile before.  I just can't seem to place where I've seen him.

Any ideas?
